Men’s Health

At Friendship Square Medical, we provide practical, confidential and respectful healthcare for men at all stages of life.

Men’s health checks

A regular health check is a good opportunity to look at your overall health and risk factors, rather than waiting until something goes wrong.

Depending on your age, symptoms, family history and risk factors, your GP may discuss blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, heart disease risk, bowel cancer screening, prostate health, skin checks, mental health, alcohol intake, smoking, sleep and exercise.

Heart health checks are particularly important as men get older, especially if there is a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol or smoking.

Prostate and urinary symptoms

Many men experience urinary symptoms as they get older, such as needing to pass urine more often, getting up at night, a weaker stream or difficulty starting. These symptoms are common, but they are still worth discussing with your GP.

Your GP can talk to you about possible causes, whether any tests are needed, and whether prostate cancer screening with a PSA blood test is appropriate for you. For men aged 50–69 with no family history of prostate cancer, Cancer Council Victoria notes that a PSA blood test every two years may be recommended; men with a family history should discuss earlier testing with their doctor.

Sexual health and erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is common and can have many causes, including stress, relationship factors, medication side effects, diabetes, heart disease, hormonal issues and lifestyle factors.

It can also be an early warning sign of other health conditions, so it is worth raising with your GP. We can provide confidential advice, arrange appropriate tests and discuss treatment options.

We also provide STI testing, sexual health advice and support with concerns such as libido, fertility and testosterone levels.

Bowel cancer screening

Bowel cancer screening is an important part of preventive health. In Australia, people aged 45 to 74 are eligible to do a bowel screening test every two years through the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program. People aged 50 to 74 are sent kits automatically, while people aged 45 to 49 can request a free kit.

Your GP can help you understand whether routine screening is suitable for you, or whether you need different testing based on symptoms or your personal or family history.

Mental health, stress and wellbeing

Men do not always find it easy to talk about stress, low mood, anxiety, relationship difficulties, burnout or grief. These issues are common, and support is available.

Your GP can help you make sense of what is happening, discuss treatment and support options, and arrange referrals where needed.

Book an appointment

To discuss any aspect of men’s health, please book an appointment with one of our GPs.

Some concerns may need a longer consultation, especially if you would like to discuss several issues, mental health, sexual health, fatigue, complex symptoms or preventive health planning. If you are unsure what appointment type to book, please call our reception team and we can help guide you.
